On Wednesday 25 November our friends Andre Kruger and Maud van der Knaap, both from Amsterdam, visited the ISURU Pre School and spend a whole morning with the children and the teachers. They also met with our Sri Lankan colleague Krishantha from the Sevalanka Foundation.
We are very happy to share their movie, pictures and story with you:
By Andre Kruger and Maud van der Knaap:
Our visit to the ISURU Pre School was very impressive. A very small cramped building, totally unsuitable for its purpose, but what an enthusiasm and warmth !
When we arrived we were met by the three teachers and two little toddlers who gave us a garland of flowers and some leaves, all according to tradition. Once inside the little school 42 pair of deep brown eyes looked at us intensly. It was a very small room, I can not even call it schoolclass. Crammed on 42 seats, where they all neatly sat, they began to sing when we entered.
Meanwhile, our friend and colleague Krishantha (Sevalanka Foundation) had arrived and we carefully looked at the work of the kids. Very strange that they are officially not allowed to receive English lessons, but this is very cleverly and creatively solved by the teachers ! The craft table was completely full with fabricated vegetables, bunnies, lanterns and flowers from old candy wrappers. Amazing what you can do with so little.

Course they also performed ‘The numbers song’ , and luckily all the children had all ten fingers at the end of the song . After the performance we ate some snacks outside with Krishantha and drunk tea with some of the parents.
We briefly discussed the situation regarding the building plans for the new School. Krishantha showed us the plot behind the current building and the first Foundation laying activities. Naturally, I indicated to Krishantha and the parents that we are working hard with the Amsterdam team to get together all the funding needed. This project is really a project that is trending topic at the moment in the entire village, and the commitment from the parents is very palpable.
We handed out the presents from Amsterdam. The stickers and folding toys were an instant hit with the kids. The 3 Teachers couldn’t be more happy with their personal notebooks and pens, nicely wrapped.
We also brought coloring pages with the new ISURU logo in full color on it. Krishantha and the teachers were so enthusiastic and had already talked about making copies once they run out. We suggested to send more over from Amsterdam.
Just an idea for the future would be to bring or send bidons/water bottles. Not every child has one and some walk with just an old plastic water bottle, which most of the time does not close properly.
After an intense and very memorable visit we had to say goodbye to the kids and the teachers. The warm hugs we got and all the smiley faces of the kids when they waved us farewell moved us very much.
In our hearts forever.
This great project will have our ongoing support and we hope to visit again next year, hopefully in the new, much improved building.
Andre & Maud
