Following a return visit to Talpe in April 2005, Eugene Bay & Matthieu Sosef felt a strong need to do something lasting for their fellow survivors, the devastated villagers of Talpe. Together with the High Priest, Rathnapura Gnanarakkitha Thero, they decided to build a school in Talpe’s Temple grounds. It would be a lasting monument to the bond they shared with the villagers and a demonstration of faith in the village’s future.

The school would be home to the Isuru Montessori PreSchool, providing an invaluable & otherwise unaffordable early learning opportunity to the young children of the village. The building would also serve as a Village Hall when the need arose. Below is the story of the original build.

  • The final architecture drawing for the building. Style chosen to be in harmony with the other buildings of the Temple complex.

Later a verandah was added to give the building added shelter from the heavy monsoon rains.

  • The first action was to determine the exact location of the building. Trees had to be cleared and the ground leveled.
  • The outer wall needed to be strengthened to support the proposed building.
  • Final positioning of the building. Head monk Ratnapura Thero uses local manpower, many of whom are out of work.
  • The basis takes shape. Building materials skyrocket in price after the Tsunami.

The monsoon rains often hindered building progress, but eventually the outer shell was completed.

Because of the post-Tsunami building boom, the price of building materials constantly jumped in price.

Some of the labour needed in the construction were local tradesmen.

The building was eventually completed in December 2006. Just in time for the first pupils who were arriving at the beginning of January 2007.
