An update after my recent visit to our beautiful project.
In the beginning of April I visited our ISURU Preschool together with fellow Patrons & Volunteers Vicky Hazewinkel and Connie Fluhme.
The week was dedicated to Bhudist New Year April 13-14 and all the rituals that go with it.
Wednesday 4 April
On Wednesday, the Teachers had initiated a real cooking class with the parents.
The idea was that the traditions of these special dishes should be passed on to the new generation so that the preparation of these dishes remains. Every traditional New Year dish was prepared on site at the playground of the school and explained to the children in detail, they could help and of course taste everything. From sticky rice, gingerballs to chips in the shape of a flower.
The kids loved it and so did we ?

Thursday, April 5
The day of the visit to the temple, all the children were dressed in blue. The color of New Year 2018. For the occasion the Teachers and Connie and I were also dressed in a blue Sari. With flowers baskets and incense sticks in their hands, the procession went by foot through the village to the higher Talpe Temple where the head monk received us. After all the children, parents and teachers had touched the flowers and oil candle sacrifices we could enter the temple where the Priest waited for us. Moving to see and hear how the little ones knew exactly what to sing when the Priest was there. A magical moment. Back at the school the rest of the parents had covered the tables for the New Years dinner with the traditional dishes.
Friday 6 April
The day of the traditional New Years games played in all schools but also among friends.
The whole village seemed to have come. Where we normally had a hand full of parents were now all the children represented by both father and mother and even sometimes even grandmother. A young monk came to give his ‘blessing’, the flags of Sri Lanka / Bhudisme and ISURU were hoisted under the song of the national anthem, after which the morning could start. From fancy dress parties, dances in traditional sarongs to pocket walking, tug-of-war for the parents … a colorful, cheerful morning. At the end of the morning, all the children were crowned Prince and Princess as it is in the tradition and they went home with a small gift from the Netherlands.
So it is super with the ISURU Preschool. The parents’ commitment is greater than ever and the level of lessons has reached the highest possible level with 3 new qualified teachers. We have received an A status from the Government and we are proud of that.
